So, what do we mean by electrification?

In a nutshell, you’re adding electrical assistance to an internal combustion engine so that it operates more efficiently. At Delphi Technologies, we’ve also coupled it with re-inventing electrical architectures via software, hardware and component integration approaches that reduce weight and elevate data speeds, capacity, power, durability and thermal output.

With our unique combined approach, you get: More power, in smaller, lighter packages that deliver fewer emissions and improved fuel economy at or below today’s costs.

Now, you may ask where do systems such as gasoline direct injection (GDi), variable valve actuation, and common rail diesel fit in with such an approach? We will continue to advance these portfolios going forward. Many can – and should – be paired with electrification technologies in any future propulsion strategy. But in terms of achieving regulatory targets, alone, we know they likely won’t get you home.

A great example of how you can pair these technologies with electrification can be found in our partnership with Tula where we combined 48-volt, mild hybrids with Dynamic Skip Fire. The result is an impressive alternative to diesel for passenger cars. The fully integrated system provides upwards of 15 percent reduction in emissions; 20 percent improvement in acceleration; plus increased low-end torque – all at 25 percent less cost than a turbo diesel option. These  types of innovative solutions on the path to electrification can help you meet regulations. And electrics? Certainly, they are visible on the horizon.

Today, we have a strong portfolio of inverters and chargers, for instance, that are in production and offer continuous improvements in reach.  The biggest detour with electrics, however, may not be technological, but psychological. Specifically, with buyers and factors such as sticker shock; value for the price they are paying balanced with performance; and continuing low fuel prices remaining an attractive disincentive to go electric.

Our 48-volt, mild hybrid system leverages the science of power electronics, which is the efficient management of electrons between direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC).

Next to the battery, power electronics presents the biggest opportunity for you to reduce costs and extend the range of all your electrified vehicles. Delphi Technologies’, which has been perfecting our expertise in power electronics for more than two decades, has developed affordable packages for you that are lighter,smaller and better thermally managed. Take our Viper inverter power switch.

This patented technology eliminates the need for wire bonds or tedious connections that can be quality and reliability issues. The compact power module also includes dual-sided cooling for enhanced thermal management. The improved cooling and compact design enables an inverter that is 40 percent lighter; 30 percent smaller; and with 25 percent higher power density. This allows for a best-value solution with more power, in a smaller package and all for less cost. In fact, we can design more power density into a smaller, lighter package than anyone on the market. It’s these types of packages that will enable full electrics.

In creating our 48-volt, mild hybrid system, we use power electronics to customize and optimize the vehicle architecture for dual voltage capability – 12-volt and 48-volt combined.

This combination – beyond providing fuel economy, emissions and performance benefits – makes it easy for you to convert existing platforms over to this new technology. It can be packaged in the same vehicle in the same powertrain system by basically adding a few more components. As such, you actually take several steps forward on your path to electrics by avoiding costly and time-intensive platform overhauls and plant changeovers.

The 48-volt battery and system supply power to the hybrid motor and super-charger to launch the vehicle faster and smoother, eliminating turbo lag. It also supports heavier electrical load items such as air conditioning. The 12-volt battery and system are enhanced from the 48-volt system via a hybrid generator, inverters and DC/DC converter. This keeps the 12-volt battery charged and thermally managed, allowing it to provide the power needed for active safety and infotainment features.

Coupled with proprietary software and hardware, the combined package ensures power is maximized yet engine demands are minimized. And it allows ample room to innovate without moving up to heavier componentry or bigger engines to get more power.
