Let’s face it – people like diesels. Many, particularly in Europe and China, grew up with them. It’s what they know; where their loyalty sits. You may even favor them in your designs. Diesels give you strong performance, durability, extra low-end torque and great fuel economy.

Breaking the diesel habit for you and your customers – despite government mandates for change and the fleet targets you’re expected to hit – won’t be easy.

But what if you could deliver essentially the same benefits with a gasoline engine? You could then spark positive changes within your portfolio that meet your challenges, as well as solidify customer satisfaction and loyalty. That’s certainly an equation that makes sense.

How we made it all add up.


What we found is the two technologies complement
each other through the reduction of pumping losses
and braking energy transfer and capture.
With conventional engines, when you take your foot
off the gas, your car starts to coast. The pistons are
still at work, but energy is wasted pumping air. These
pumping losses, as we call them, are inefficient. The
beauty of DSF is that it only fires with the energy
that’s needed – when it’s needed. So, when coasting,
the pistons don’t pump air and you decelerate less.
And, when you hit the brakes, it pushes the stopping
load from the engine to the brakes. Fuel economy
improves. However, the braking energy that could be
tapped – isn’t. That’s where the 48-volt, mild hybrid
comes in.

The 48-volt, mild hybrid system is actually engineered
to capture and convert braking energy. The free
energy boosts the 48-volt system gets from DSF
through a process we call “regen” can be stored and
later used when extra torque is needed. This reduces
the demands on the engine, thereby saving fuel and
allowing the mild hybrid to be driven for longer
periods of time. 

There’s no question that combined, the two
technologies can give you – and your customers – a
better value proposition than diesels. And that’s
something that simply adds up.

With the advances planned in vehicle-to- vehicle communication and vehicle-to- infrastructure capabilities, you’ll know if the road ahead is flat or hilly; congested or wide open; and traffic light patterns and durations. Our planned trajectory for our combined 48-volt and DSF system is to connect these technologies to these advances and then optimize propulsion operation based on these changing inputs.

And both technologies play a key role in the path to electrification, which is all about electrifying internal combustion engines over the course of the next several decades, as we work to help you progress to electric vehicles through mild hybrids, full hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
